Correlation between Height, Weight, and Flexibility with High Jumpt: A Study of Volleyball Players

Abstract

Background: The specific relationship between anthropometric factors and flexibility and vertical jump height remains poorly understood among volleyball athletes. Understanding this relationship is crucial for developing targeted training programs that optimize athletic performance and competitive advantage in volleyball. Objectives: This study aims to analyze the correlation between height, weight, and flexibility with vertical jump height among volleyball players, and to determine which physical attributes most significantly influence jumping performance. Methods: A quantitative correlational approach was employed involving 40 volleyball athletes from Vopas Club in Semarang City, selected through purposive sampling. Data collection included height measurement using stadiometer, body weight using digital scale, flexibility assessment through Sit and Reach Test, and vertical jump ability using Vertical Jump Test. Results: Height demonstrated a strong positive correlation with jump height (r = 0.708, p < 0.01), indicating that taller players achieve significantly higher jumps. Body weight showed a moderate positive correlation (r = 0.384, p < 0.05), suggesting that optimal body composition contributes to jumping ability. Flexibility exhibited a weak and statistically insignificant correlation (r = 0.205, p > 0.05), demonstrating minimal direct influence on vertical jump performance. Conclusion: Jump height is predominantly influenced by anthropometric factors, particularly height, while body weight plays a moderate supportive role and flexibility has minimal direct impact. This research contributes to understanding that volleyball training programs should prioritize leg muscle strength development, explosive power enhancement, and optimal body composition management, with flexibility training serving as a complementary component for movement fluidity and injury prevention.
